Every ambitious employee should know why they are doing their present job, and how it is helping them to achieve their long term goals. Let’s take a very basic example. If you want to become a trader, would you take employment in a garage, a pet shop, or as an operations person in a bank? While you might enjoy working with cars, or around animals, neither would enhance your curriculum vitae when interviewing for that coveted position as a trader’s assistant. On the other hand, a period in the operations department of a bank would both demonstrate your interest in banking in general, your desire to work within that environment, and the fact that you had a good working knowledge of how a trade was processed after it was made.
So you should always be aware of where you want to be in 5, 10, 20 years’ time, and be able to demonstrate that your current job is on the path which will lead you there. Now fate and economy don’t always help us to maintain a smooth progression, and sometimes external forces work to push us off the path: but we should not become to comfortable in our position if we are forced into a sideways step. We should constantly be reviewing opportunities to put us back on our chosen path.
So always seek opportunities to update and improve on your curriculum vitae. Does it tell your existing or prospective boss about the skills and interests you have which show you are a good match for that new position or promotion?
